Bird flu is bad for people, animals, and agriculture. After spreading rapidly between giant chicken and turkey operations and impacting millions of chickens and turkeys along with uncountable wild birds, this flu has now jumped to giant dairy operations where it is sickening cows and farm workers. As the virus spreads between animals and humans it has the potential to change and become even more deadly.
The government response so far has failed to keep this potentially deadly pathogen under control. Please join us in demanding that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) take specific steps to keep this bad bug from becoming the next pandemic.
Our petition demands the USDA and HHS implement the following actions:
Enhanced monitoring of food animals to detect and contain bird flu.
Effective vaccination programs for workers and food animals.
Improved support and protective measures for food workers who are at high risk of exposure.
Increased support for local, high animal welfare farming outside the industrialized animal agriculture sector.
